The death toll from record rainfall in Chiba Prefecture this month has risen to 10, including cases under investigation for links with the disaster, while one person remains missing, the prefectural government said Aug. 16.

The 10th victim was a man in his 30s who died from carbon monoxide poisoning after using an electric generator due to a power outage at his home in the city of Chiba.

According to the prefecture, about 1,500 houses were flooded. More than 1,200 flooded vehicles were abandoned on roads after the downpour, and over 100 vehicles remain to be removed. In the city of Ichihara, a three-vehicle accident occurred when a car crashed into an abandoned vehicle.

Rain battered Chiba from Aug. 13, with bands of intense rain clouds repeatedly forming over the prefecture. The city of Chiba’s Chuo Ward received 367 mm of rain in the 12 hours through 9:40 a.m. Aug. 14. That was three times the city’s average monthly rainfall for August.

The deluge caused widespread disruption across the prefecture. The Self-Defense Forces transported about 4,000 people stranded at JR Soga Station to a temporary shelter at the Chiba Prefectural Cultural Hall after the prefecture’s governor requested its support.

Approximately 7,000 passengers had been stranded overnight at Narita Airport after train and bus services were suspended. On Aug. 14, long lines were seen at the train station as services gradually resumed.

大雨は県内各地で広範囲にわたって混乱を引き起こした。自衛隊は、県知事が支援を要請した後、JR蘇我駅で足止めされた約4,000人を千葉県文化会館の一時滞在施設へ輸送した。

成田空港では乗客約7,000人が電車とバスの運行停止後に足止めされた。８月14日に運行が徐々に再開すると、駅には長蛇の列が見られた。
