英語：“Motorcycles and English as twin life pillars”
Raiko Fujioka is an entrepreneur through and through. “I owe much to my father, who was a novelist,” he says. “Unlike other kids’ fathers he worked from home and was completely independent. I, too, decided to go my own way.”
Fujioka is the founder and president of QQEnglish, an online English coaching school based in Cebu, Philippines. QQEnglish coaches English learners across Asia and beyond, offering quality English lessons at reasonable prices. “All our teachers must hold TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) certifications. They must also become formal employees. I believe that giving people the full benefits of formal employment is key to creating a happy workplace,” Fujioka says.
Before he started his English business, Fujioka’s first love was motorcycles. “From a young age, I loved all kinds of vehicles and even upgraded my motorcycle license to the biggest engine class, which was more difficult than getting a law degree!”
How did that lead to English? “My enthusiasm for European motorbikes led me to become friends with the president of Malaguti, the Italian manufacturer. But we had to communicate through an interpreter, which was no fun. I strongly wanted to be able to talk about my favorite motorcycles in my own words, so in 2005, at the age of 40, I went to the Philippines solely to improve my English conversation skills.”
English learning in the Philippines was “miraculous,” Fujioka says. “It was all one-on-one, intensive personal lessons. At my age, I didn’t want to be in group lessons with a lot of young people and found that I could really concentrate on the lessons. To ensure that I could continue learning after returning to Japan, I provided my teacher with a computer and continued taking online lessons. As a result, I was able to talk with motorcycle owners in Italy in my own words, and discovered the joy of connecting with people overseas on my own.”
Fujioka had always been creative about his own English education. “I twice failed the university entrance exams so decided to study in the U.S. instead, even though I had zero English skills. I thought things would be all right once I got there.” He was wrong. Fujioka was set to go to the University of Wisconsin but couldn’t find it. “Fortunately, an old lady at the bus stop took pity and helped me out. I wanted to thank her profusely but I didn’t know how to say it in English.”
Things didn’t improve when classes started and Fujioka was told to read hundreds of pages of textbook material. “I couldn’t stick it out in the U.S. In a few months, I was back in Japan.”
But that was the 1980s and motorcycles formed a new and lucrative industry. “I started a motorcycle courier company with nothing but a cheap apartment, one landline and my motorbike. The courier industry had no regulations yet and my business had no overhead. The hours were crazy but we were earning good money.” Business was so brisk he bought a building to start a motorcycle shop. And though the shop did not always go well, he brought his experience and management skills to launching QQEnglish.
“It took me 10 years to get it off the ground. And now we have the best English teachers in Asia, with the skills and technique to teach people real and genuine English.”

英語事業を始める前、藤岡さんが最初に情熱を注いだのはバイクだった。「若いときから乗り物は何でも好きで、バイクの免許を最大エンジンレベルのものにグレードアップしさえしましたが、それは法学部の学位を取るよりも難しいです！」
それはどのように英語につながったのだろうか？ 「ヨーロッパのバイクに熱中していたら、イタリアのメーカー、マラグーティの社長と仲良くなりました。でも通訳を通してコミュニケーションを取らなければならず、楽しめなかったです。大好きなバイクについて自分の言葉で話せるようになりたいと強く思い、2005年に40歳で英会話スキルを高めるためだけにフィリピンへ行きました」。
フィリピンでの英語学習は「驚くほど効果的」だったと藤岡さんは語る。「全て１対１の集中個人レッスン。年齢的に若者が多いグループレッスンに加わりたいと思わず、本当に授業に集中できることが分かりました。帰国後も勉強を続けられるよう、私は自分の先生にコンピュータを１台提供して、オンラインレッスンを受け続けました。その結果、イタリアのバイクのオーナーと自分の言葉で話すことができ、海外の人と自力でつながる喜びを発見しました」。
藤岡さんは、自身の英語学習に関して常に独創的だった。「大学入試に２度落ちたので、代わりに米国で勉強することにしました。英語力はゼロだったんですが。行ってしまえばうまくいくだろうと思っていました」。彼は間違っていた。藤岡さんはウィスコンシン大学に行こうとしたが、見つけられなかった。「運良く、バス停にいた年配の女性が、気の毒に思って私を助けてくれました。彼女に心から感謝したかったんですが、英語で何と言えばいいのか分かりませんでした」。
授業が始まり、藤岡さんは教材を何百ページも読むように言われたが、状況は改善しなかった。「米国で最後までやり抜くことができませんでした。数ヵ月で帰国したんです」。
しかし、それは1980年代のことで、バイクは利益の大きい新たな産業を形成した。「安いアパートと固定電話、自分のバイクだけで、バイク便の会社を始めました。バイク便業界にはまだ規制がなく、私の事業には固定費がかかりませんでした。労働時間は尋常ではありませんでしたが、かなりの収入を得ていました」。事業がとても好調だったので、バイク店を始めるためにビルを購入した。その店はいつもうまく行っていたわけではなかったが、彼の経験と経営スキルを活かしてQQ Englishを立ち上げた。
「事業を軌道に乗せるのに10年かかりました。そして今、当社にはアジアで最も優れた英語講師たちがいて、本当の本物の英語を教えるスキルとテクニックを備えています」。
