英語：“Medal bonanza: Team Japan on a tear at Winter Olympics”

After a disappointing short program, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara put together their best free skate of the year Feb. 16, earning 158.13 points, thunderous applause from the crowd and, most importantly, an Olympic gold medal.

The two-time pairs world champions had a mistake-free skate and enthralled the capacity crowd at Milano Ice Skating Arena from their opening triple toe loop, double axel, double axel sequence right through to the end of their four-minute routine.

The gold is Japan’s first in the event and the country’s first figure skating gold since Yuzuru Hanyu at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

It also adds to an impressive tally for Japan’s skaters. Along with the pairs gold and team silver, Yuma Kagiyama took silver in the men’s singles, with teammate Shun Sato completing the podium with bronze.

With a few days remaining at the Milano Cortina Games, even the harshest critics would be hard-pressed to give Team Japan anything short of an A.

Across northern Italy, the nation’s figure skaters have dazzled, its ski jumpers have soared, and its snowboarders have shredded Livigno Snow Park and just about every competitor standing in their way.

It’s hard to believe now, but the last time the Games were held in this part of the world, in Turin in 2006, Japan won just a single medal — a gold by Shizuka Arakawa in women’s figure skating.
