Of all the words and phrases used to try and put Shohei Ohtani’s superhuman feats into a perspective understood by mere mortals, there is one that is becoming increasingly common around this time of the year: most valuable player.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way superstar was named National League MVP for the second straight season by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America on Nov. 13. Ohtani was the unanimous selection for the award for the second straight season, and claimed the honor over fellow finalists Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets slugger Juan Soto.

“It’s such a great honor,” Ohtani said on MLB Network. “Soto and Schwarber also had amazing seasons, and I was happy to compete against such great players.”

The New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge was named American League MVP for the second straight season.

This year marked the first time in MLB history that both leagues had repeat winners.

Ohtani hit 55 home runs at the plate and made 14 starts on the mound as he returned to his two-way role during the regular season before helping the Dodgers win their second straight World Series title with a strong showing in the postseason.

Ohtani joined Barry Bonds as the only players with at least four MVP awards. Bonds won seven during his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants.
