Chiikawa”
Guess which small, cute character owned the summer of 2026.
It was Chiikawa, a diminutive mouselike creature who is also the title character of the web manga and TV series of the same name. Chiikawa and his animal friends have become a cuddly force in recent years, and this past July the first film, Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island, dominated the summer box office. By the start of September, it had made over ¥12 billion.
The overall cuteness of the series and film certainly has helped make the character a hit, but what has turned it into a Reiwa Era sensation is how relatable its world can be — and how heavy its topics can become.
The story of Chiikawa began with an artist named Nagano. In 2017, she shared a sketch of Chiikawa to Twitter (now called X), writing how she wished she could be like this little critter and escape the modern world. She developed her sketch into a series, which she began publishing on Twitter in 2020 as Chiikawa, allowing it to reach people quickly in a way traditional manga couldn’t.
The stories, centered on Chiikawa, the catlike Hachiware, the frantic rabbit Usagi and other characters, connected with people. Soon, the online comic was being sold as physical collections, and merchandise was flying off shelves. Based on the number of Chiikawa key chains, stuffed animals and T-shirts you can see on the street, you would be forgiven for thinking it had become popular just for being cute.
Like Rilakkuma and Gudetama before it, Chiikawa made a deeper connection thanks to good writing. Chiikawa’s world is populated mostly by cute animals and features surreal touches like a giant pudding, but the characters in Chiikawa often find themselves in scary situations. Their world can also be a lot like our own; they have to take up gig work to make a living, as well as navigate the mind-boggling mazes of bureaucracy. If you want to drink alcohol, you have to pass a whole exam. Chiikawa’s world isn’t a bad place, but it certainly can be tiring.
Mermaid Island generated buzz for a similar reason. The movie’s plot seems simple at first — Chiikawa and pals go to a tropical island for a work opportunity, fun and adventure — but then the film takes a turn, introducing themes such as guilt and punishment. Lots of people went to theaters expecting a cute film. They got something heavier, which surprised many, but in a good way.
That’s the secret to the Chiikawa universe. It’s kawaii and fun, but also reflects our own world back at us, while offering some heavy philosophical ideas. Nagano’s creation is a huge hit, and one that also serves as a snapshot of how people in the Reiwa Era feel.
