Reading books with my identical twin”

My twin sister and I share a fun way to stay close, even though she lives in Florida and I live in Japan. We read books together.

When we were younger, we hated the attention we received as twins. We wore wildly different hairstyles to hide our identical faces. But our similar mannerisms confused even our closest friends. There was nothing we could do about our similar strengths in school. Both of us loved the humanities and avoided maths. Our love of dance, too, was a shared hobby neither one of us could give up. We each majored in English literature at the same university and became teachers.

I learned as a child to say hello to anyone who greeted me, in case they were a friend of my sister’s. Our father still calls us two peas in a pod.

But even for twins, life often separates siblings. Now, as adults living on separate continents, we celebrate our similarities by choosing a book to read together.

We are both bookworms and read constantly, across many genres, for both work and pleasure.

But there are plenty of books my sister likes that I do not. Likewise, my favorite books are sometimes a miss for my sister’s taste.

We have learned over the years to choose wisely for our shared reads. That’s usually easy, as we know each other’s preferences so well. For example, my sister loves almost any memoir she reads. As soon as I find a memoir I am interested in, I will recommend it to her, and we read it together.

My sister and I can also relive childhood memories by rereading a treasured classic together. When we were growing up in the U.S., young adult fiction was not yet a genre. Frequently, young readers progressed straight from chapter books to adult books. Sometimes, one of us will suggest rereading a book we loved as teenagers to judge if it stands the test of time, like when we recently reread Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.

Most of my friends, even fellow teachers, complain that they no longer read for pleasure. I also notice in my classroom that it is rare today to find a student with their nose in a book. Instead, students are usually distracted by screens.

With so many different types of entertainment available, it’s natural that reading for pleasure is losing popularity. When novels first came out, many people in society argued that it was a dangerous pastime, so I am not too worried. Things change; you find your pleasures where you can.

The best thing about reading a good book is that it transports you to a different world. My sister and I share this pleasure in imagination. We can still enter those worlds together, even while living thousands of miles apart.
