Train melodies”
Maya:Hello there, Zack. What’s that you’re humming?
Zack:Maya! Hi. You know what, I have no idea. It’s just a jingle or something that’s got stuck in my head. An earworm.
Maya:Hum it again for me, will you? Maybe I can place it.
Zack:(Hums a tune) Do you know it?
Maya:It’s a train melody. One of those short melodies you hear before a train departs a station. But which station …? Can you remember?
Zack:I don’t think so. But wait. Now that I think about it, all the stations in Tokyo have these tunes. So many different tunes.
Maya:Not just Tokyo. They’re in stations all over the country.
Zack:So you can tell which station you’re at just by the song?
Maya:I guess. The tunes give each station a character. I remember hearing once that the theme from Astro Boy plays at Takadanobaba Station, because the anime’s makers are based in the area. Or at least, that’s what a train melody fan told me. Don’t ask me how we met …
Zack:A train melody fan?
Maya:In Japan, there’s a fan for everything. Anyway, he told me about a famous composer who’s written train melodies for more than 100 stations.
Zack:That’s a lot of songs.
Maya:The interesting thing is that, since each stop is short, you’ve got to pace it just right. An intro, building to a sort of climax. But you can have fun with it. Apparently, there was one train line where all the melodies fit together to make a complete song.
Zack:That’s mad. Which line?
Maya:I can’t remember. In any case, they change the tunes every so often, so they may have changed that line’s music too. But these days, all the jingles are on YouTube. Or CD.
Zack:Right! I remember now. One of Joseph’s friends was over and they were playing that tune. (Sings tune again.)
Maya:Yurakucho!
