The Osaka Expo opened its doors April 13 to the first of what organizers hope will be 28.2 million visitors over the next six months to Yumeshima island.

A day after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed hopes that the expo can bring together a world that he called “divided,” the general public got its first look at the massive Grand Ring, designed to symbolize unity, and the roughly 160 pavilions of participating nations, regions and organizations.

A marching band welcomed the first people through the gates alongside a group that included Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura and Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, the secretary general of the Bureau International des Expositions, which organizes world expos.

And yes, the expo’s peculiar mascot, Myaku-Myaku, was there too, helping usher in the stream of visitors, some clad in headgear resembling the multi-eyed character.

Rainy weather on the opening day canceled a planned flyover by the Air Self-Defense Force’s Blue Impulse demonstration crew, but seemed to do little to dampen the spirits of expo early birds.

Mari Iwasawa, an Osaka native who now lives in Saitama Prefecture, was among the first guests through the gates when the expo opened at 9 a.m.

For her, the expo represented something of a nostalgia trip, as Iwasawa attended the 1970 Expo numerous times as a young child.

“I hope to see all of the pavilions this year, too,” she said.

大阪・関西万国博覧会が４月13日、主催者が今後６ヵ月間で2,820万人の夢洲への来場者となることを期待する最初の人々に門を開いた。

石破茂首相が「分断された」と呼ぶ世界を万博が一つにできる期待を表明した翌日、一般来場者たちは、団結を象徴するためにデザインされた巨大な大屋根リングと、参加している国と地域、組織の約160の展示館を初めて観覧した。

大阪の吉村洋文知事や、万博を主催する博覧会国際事務局のディミトリ・S・ケルケンツェス事務局長などを含む一団と共に、ゲートから入ってきた最初の来場者たちをマーチングバンドが歓迎した。

そして、この万博の独特なマスコット、ミャクミャクもそこにいて、来場者の流れを迎え入れるのを手伝い、この目がいくつもあるキャラクターに似た被り物を被った人たちもいた。

初日の雨天により、予定されていた自衛隊のブルーインパルスの乗組員による飛行は中止されたが、そのことは万博を早くから訪れていた人たちの気分をそぐことにはならなかった。

大阪出身で、現在は埼玉県に住んでいるイワサワマリさんは、万博が午前９時に開場したときにゲートを通じて最初に入ってきた客の１人だった。

彼女にとって、万博は昔を懐かしむ旅行のようなものだった。イワサワさんは1970年の万博に子どもの頃に何度も訪れた。

「今年も展示館を全て見たいです」とイワサワさんは語った。
