Fans of Studio Ghibli, the famed Japanese animation studio behind Spirited Away and other beloved movies, were delighted when a new version of ChatGPT released March 26 let them transform popular internet memes or personal photos into the distinct style of Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki.

But the trend also highlighted ethical concerns about artificial intelligence tools trained on copyrighted creative works and what that means for the future livelihoods of human artists.

Entrepreneur Janu Lingeswaran wasn’t thinking much about that when he uploaded a photo of his cat into ChatGPT’s new image generator tool on March 26. ChatGPT converted the photo to the Ghibli style, instantly making an anime image that looked like the many feline characters in Miyazaki movies such as My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki’s Delivery Service.

“I really fell in love with the result,” said Lingeswaran.

ChatGPT maker OpenAI has largely encouraged the “Ghiblification” experiments and its CEO, Sam Altman, changed his profile on social media platform X into a Ghibli-style portrait.

Studio Ghibli declined to comment March 28.

しかしこの潮流は、著作権がある創作物で訓練された人工知能ツールに関して、そして、人間のアーティストの将来の生計にとってそのことが何を意味するのかに関して、倫理的な懸念も浮き彫りにした。

起業家のヤヌ・リンゲワランさんは、３月26日にチャットGPTの新しい画像生成ツールに彼の猫の写真をアップロードしたとき、それについてはあまり考えていなかった。チャットGPTはその猫の写真をジブリ風に変換し、『となりのトトロ』や『魔女の宅急便』などの宮崎監督の映画に出てくる多くの猫のキャラクターに似たアニメ画像を瞬時に作成した。
