Amateur shutterbug in Japan snaps rare ‘turned-over soup bowl’ sunrise ”
An amateur photographer from Toba, Mie Prefecture, captured a stunning shot of the rising sun shaped like a Japanese soup bowl set upside down on a table.
In mid-November, 76-year-old Hiroharu Okamura headed out to the city’s Ijikacho district along Ise Bay, to take photos as the morning sun was climbing over the horizon. Notches pinching both sides of the sun’s upper portion made it look uncannily like the base of a soup bowl. It is thought the sun’s light was bent into this shape by overlying misty clouds.
When the morning or evening sun is warped by the horizon, this type of mirage is called a “Daruma sun” in Japanese, after its resemblance to Daruma dolls, a type of Buddhist good luck charm. “This was an inverted ‘Daruma sun.’ And so it looked like an upside-down soup bowl. Though it was by chance, this was a very rare sight,” Okamura said.
