A California jogger proved he knew how to take an emergency in stride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good Samaritan \u2014 who was later identified as Paul Murphy \u2014 was taking a run through a Scotts Valley neighborhood earlier this month when he noticed smoke coming from a house\u2019s garage, Bay Area news station KSBW reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy sprinted into action by dashing up to the home\u2019s door and ringing the doorbell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to footage posted by NBC Bay Area journalist Garvin Thomas, it didn\u2019t appear that anyone was home at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But homeowner Courtney Polito saw a man she didn\u2019t know nervously pacing in front of her door through the camera on a smart doorbell and decided to answer him remotely by saying \u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHello, do you see there\u2019s smoke coming out of the top of your house?\u201d Murphy can be heard asking Polito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polito told Inside Edition, in the video below, that she noticed the smoke on camera and \u201cpanicked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also told WTHR-TV that she then noticed the fire alarms going off inside the home and immediately gave Murphy the code to her door so he could enter and save the family\u2019s pets \u2014 two dachshunds, a rabbit and a cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not knowing what he\u2019d find on the other side of the door, Murphy entered the house. He can be seen later in the footage running out of the home carrying one of the dachshunds under his arm to safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt takes a special kind of person [to] go into a burning house to save animals,\u201d Polito\u2019s husband, Tony, told KSBW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy left the home before the family could meet him and thank him. But thanks to his heroic actions, the fire didn\u2019t spread beyond the garage, KSBW reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polito told WTHR that if Murphy hadn\u2019t been there, they would have lost everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fire department said 10 more minutes and the house would have been gone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to give him a hug,\u201d Polito told KSBW before learning Murphy\u2019s identity. \u201cI\u2019ll buy him lunch. I\u2019ll buy him dinner. I don\u2019t know, I want to just thank him so much and let him know how thankful we are. My kids, myself, my husband, we would be devastated if we lost our pets, let alone our home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Scotts Valley Fire Department may recommend a commendation for Murphy, KSBW reports.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
