British government officials say nearly 6,400 spectators may have contracted the coronavirus at Euro 2020 soccer matches that were held earlier this year. Researchers say this shows how easy it is for the virus to spread in close-contact settings.
Research was conducted on the virus’s potential impact on large-scale gatherings. The officials released the results of that research on Friday, ahead of the resumption of mass events.
Spectators were required to present proof they had received a vaccine or tested negative for the virus before they entered the stadium. But researchers say more than 3,000 may have been infected already when the matches took place.
The matches were held during a one-month period. The U.K. experienced a surge in infections during that time.
