{"id":472,"date":"2021-05-21T17:55:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-21T08:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/?p=472"},"modified":"2021-05-21T20:05:41","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T11:05:41","slug":"stephens-blog-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/?p=472","title":{"rendered":"Stephen&#8217;s blog"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear Regular (and those not so) Newsletter Readers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope this week\u2019s edition of our newsletter finds you all well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As promised, I am offering up a poem this week, well at least an attempt at one, it\u2019s been a while and I expect my poetry is still as disjointed and horrid as it ever was, but here\u2019s my attempt for this week.&nbsp; It\u2019s a poem of sorts about my foray into Japanese plum wine (Umeshu) making; actually, the only part I play in the making of the wine is going up a ladder and picking the plums off the tree, it\u2019s my wife that sterilizes the jars, washes the fruit and adds the brandy and sugar. &nbsp;The jars are then put away into a cupboard and forgotten about for a year or more and after which time we sample with great anticipation the fruits of our collective labour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope you enjoy the poem and until next week, keep safe and have a pleasant weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em><u>Plum pulling time<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It\u2019s quickly approaching plum pulling time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1 more week to go before I relieve my plum tree of all its fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protective net covering the tree deters birds from having their fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It usually works until the plums are ready to pull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plums are hard, green and of a certain size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are not used to make jam nor do they end up in pies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will be washed and put into jars with brandy and rock sugar to make plum wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These jars of sweet alcoholic libation are then put away to refine. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time is required to make plum wine, it takes a year or more before we can taste the fruits of our labour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plum wine is best drunk over ice or mixed with soda water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing goes to waste, you can eat the plums as they have an exquisite taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plums are good for health so I always pop a plum into a glass I pour for myself.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a plum in the glass from the start of the drink to the end adds texture and flavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It allows you to better savour the taste as the last drop smoothly glides down your throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With all the wine now drunk take your forefinger and thumb and take out that plum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then like little Jack Horner (no need to sit in the corner) you can say what a good boy am I \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/wp2021\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210521s.jpg\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>A poem by Stephen Austwick.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Regular (and those not so) Newsletter Readers, I hope this week\u2019s edition of our newsletter finds you all&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-472","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-stephens-corner"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/472","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=472"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/472\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":480,"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/472\/revisions\/480"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=472"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=472"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.alphabendi.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=472"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
