Raiko Fujioka is an entrepreneur through and through. \u201cI owe much to my father, who was a novelist,\u201d he says. \u201cUnlike other kids\u2019 fathers he worked from home and was completely independent. I, too, decided to go my own way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fujioka is the founder and president of QQEnglish, an online English coaching school based in Cebu, Philippines. QQEnglish coaches English learners across Asia and beyond, offering quality English lessons at reasonable prices. \u201cAll our teachers must hold TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) certifications. They must also become formal employees. I believe that giving people the full benefits of formal employment is key to creating a happy workplace,\u201d Fujioka says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before he started his English business, Fujioka\u2019s first love was motorcycles. \u201cFrom a young age, I loved all kinds of vehicles and even upgraded my motorcycle license to the biggest engine class, which was more difficult than getting a law degree!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How did that lead to English? \u201cMy enthusiasm for European motorbikes led me to become friends with the president of Malaguti, the Italian manufacturer. But we had to communicate through an interpreter, which was no fun. I strongly wanted to be able to talk about my favorite motorcycles in my own words, so in 2005, at the age of 40, I went to the Philippines solely to improve my English conversation skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
English learning in the Philippines was \u201cmiraculous,\u201d Fujioka says. \u201cIt was all one-on-one, intensive personal lessons. At my age, I didn\u2019t want to be in group lessons with a lot of young people and found that I could really concentrate on the lessons. To ensure that I could continue learning after returning to Japan, I provided my teacher with a computer and continued taking online lessons. As a result, I was able to talk with motorcycle owners in Italy in my own words, and discovered the joy of connecting with people overseas on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fujioka had always been creative about his own English education. \u201cI twice failed the university entrance exams so decided to study in the U.S. instead, even though I had zero English skills. I thought things would be all right once I got there.\u201d He was wrong. Fujioka was set to go to the University of Wisconsin but couldn\u2019t find it. \u201cFortunately, an old lady at the bus stop took pity and helped me out. I wanted to thank her profusely but I didn\u2019t know how to say it in English.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Things didn\u2019t improve when classes started and Fujioka was told to read hundreds of pages of textbook material. \u201cI couldn\u2019t stick it out in the U.S. In a few months, I was back in Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that was the 1980s and motorcycles formed a new and lucrative industry. \u201cI started a motorcycle courier company with nothing but a cheap apartment, one landline and my motorbike. The courier industry had no regulations yet and my business had no overhead. The hours were crazy but we were earning good money.\u201d Business was so brisk he bought a building to start a motorcycle shop. And though the shop did not always go well, he brought his experience and management skills to launching QQEnglish.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt took me 10 years to get it off the ground. And now we have the best English teachers in Asia, with the skills and technique to teach people real and genuine English.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
