Emi Yuda may be a rarity in Japanese society; she has never wanted to be like everyone else. \u201cI never wanted what everyone else wanted,\u201d explains Yuda. \u201cI figured things like marriage and buying a house were best left to other people. At university, I chose Moscow for my study-abroad. No one else was doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yuda\u2019s personal creed has paid off in spades. In 2024, Yuda became the first woman appointed to a professorship in the 56-year history of Mie University\u2019s Faculty of Engineering. Her specific field includes semiconductors, which she also researched extensively during her time at Tohoku University, where she had an assistant professorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of Yuda\u2019s strengths is the ability to work in fields that seem unrelated \u2014 engineering, data science and medicine. She can also work in foreign languages, namely English and Russian. \u201cActually, I couldn\u2019t speak English until I was 30. And I wasn\u2019t in academia either, but working for a company. This was when Japan was in the middle of a hiring deep freeze and I counted myself lucky to be employed at all. When I couldn\u2019t see myself continuing on the corporate path, I saw an opportunity to work in a research lab in Los Angeles. I just took off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In California, Yuda worked in the lab on weekdays and learned English in an ESL school on the weekends. \u201cIn our lab, almost everyone was a non-native speaker. This was when Barack Obama was president and diversity was the norm. There was a girl from Belarus and we spoke in Russian. There were many Hispanic people talking in Spanish. I learned to understand American culture and language through work and daily tasks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then in 2013, she was at a Department of Motor Vehicles office with a co-worker from Mexico when her phone was inundated with messages warning her not to come to work because there was a shooting at the university. \u201cI honestly didn\u2019t know what \u2018shooting\u2019 meant. Then I learned what was really happening. Not long after, I left the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Back in Japan, Yuda entered the world of Japanese academia. \u201cMy English never got to native-speaker level but that didn\u2019t bother me. What\u2019s much more important is the content of your work. No one checks a Nobel Prize-winning paper for grammatical mistakes or sentence structure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Yuda, English is ultimately a tool. She doesn\u2019t think one should learn the language just for its own sake. \u201cThat said, communication and interaction are key in any workplace environment, especially so in academic research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But whether you\u2019re in academia or not, Yuda feels it\u2019s important for young people to have a \u201cvision and a plan for the future. Leaving decision-making to elders and authority figures does no one any favors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yuda\u2019s current research focuses on developing algorithms for use in wearable sensor devices, like the smartwatch she was wearing during our interview. \u201cThis can be used during surgery and other medical procedures as well as to assist in diagnosis, which is crucial to preventive medicine. Otherwise, I\u2019m interested in the decline of Japan\u2019s population, which is slated to decrease substantially by 2050. As a nation, we need to downsize and make cities more compact. And I feel that small regional universities are in the best position to develop solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
