Many English teachers say that public speaking in English builds both confidence and language skills. That’s why English learners are encouraged to speak up and converse with others. Several steps beyond that, you could learn how to debate in English. That’s how Kaho Fujikawa developed and honed her English skills.

Debating opened the door to a future career for Fujikawa when she kickstarted a company during her sophomore year at Osaka Metropolitan University. “I co-launched Logiglish with Atsushi Sakahara of the economics department,” Fujikawa says. This was in December 2022, just a week after the release of ChatGPT. “Before that, I had participated in a business program initiated by the Edgeson Management Association. I met someone from the personnel department of a big corporation and was told that while many Japanese score high in English tests, far fewer speak English. I wanted to close that gap by creating an artificial intelligence native online English learning service.”

Logiglish is geared to English learners eager to acquire and use real-world language skills. “We provide language learning that is based on what each learner wants to talk about. For example, if someone wants to discuss a paper on AI and economics, Logiglish helps them talk about it in English. Our service can be used by people in a wide range of fields — factory workers overseas, business professionals, athletes, doctors, lawyers and consultants. It supports levels from beginner junior high school English to advanced. We developed this service through a lot of trial and error, and I feel that my experience in debating helped develop the right product.”

Fujikawa began debating in her freshman year of high school, when she joined the school’s newly founded English debate club. “Before that, I was entering speech contests to practice and improve my English, which I had been learning and studying from childhood. Then I discovered debating, and it was like nothing I had ever experienced.” Unlike a speech contest, where she could prepare a script beforehand, debating required on-the-spot thinking and improvised speaking. “My first contests were rough. But I read and listened to a lot of news stories and studied the headlines. I practiced with my team to learn news jargon, vocabulary and phrases. And the more we trained, the better we got.”

Fujikawa adds that debating calls not just for English skills but intellectual rigor, good research abilities and focused logical thinking. One memorable debate involved Japan’s new labor laws and the restriction on long working hours. “The preparation was intense. We did the research, gathered the data, and interviewed the family of a karoshi victim. In the process, we realized it was about more than just English speaking or even debating. My world got a lot bigger and I learned so much.”

Fujikawa says that debating taught her the importance of being informed about the news and backing up her opinions with research — and of keeping her knowledge base up to date. Her debating background is aiding her now as she studies business management at Padova University in Italy. “It’s a totally different environment from Japan. But I’m exposed to a wealth of different points of view that encourages me to think outside the box.”
