Some of the renewed interest in Tamagotchi comes from older people revisiting a product they played with as children. It is also the perfect piece of Heisei Era nostalgia for those who didn\u2019t live through it. Younger people like Tamagotchi, but they also like the period it represents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Tamagotchi was one of the biggest toy trends of the 1990s in Japan, becoming a must-have item that soon became rare. It morphed into a global phenomenon, too. I remember getting one as an elementary school student and trying my best to keep my octopus-shaped pet alive while also staying on top of my homework. My grandma got one too, and loved it so much she took it with her everywhere she went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like all trends, eventually the Tamagotchi lost its luster as people moved on to something else. Yet the franchise itself carried on. Bandai found new ways to keep the Tamagotchi relevant to younger fans, such as creating an anime around the characters and making it possible for users to connect eggs. This helped introduce the toy to another generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The current interest in the Tamagotchi, though, feels connected to the 1996 original version. It is part of a greater interest in the late \u201990s and early 2000s playing out all over the world. That period of time was very digital, but most new technological developments were still physical products. There\u2019s something inviting about such a product in the 2020s, where many experiences play out only online or via streaming media, and often feel overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Tamagotchi reminds us of a time when new technologies were fun and manageable \u2014 something many younger people in Japan have never experienced. Besides being cute and fun, Tamagotchis allow young people to approach an era long over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which, funny enough, has also resulted in another experience many probably thought wouldn\u2019t come back \u2014 trying to secure Tamagotchi goods. The 30th anniversary celebration has been marked with lots of special limited-time goods that have become tough to get. Besides Tamagotchi toys themselves, clothing brand Shimamura announced a line of clothes and tote bags with the aliens on them \u2026 all of which became pre-order hits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Bandai released a special charm that went on sale in convenience stores. My sister-in-law wanted one and I tried to hunt it down \u2026 but after visiting a dozen stores, I failed to find any because they were sold out.
