Yu Kikuchi is a sergeant first class with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and she\u2019s an interpreting noncommissioned officer. Because of the nature of her organization, she deals with classified and sensitive information on a daily basis. \u201cIt\u2019s been 20 years since I joined the GSDF and 11 years since I became an interpreter. It\u2019s been a tough road and the work is always demanding. But I\u2019m deeply grateful to the GSDF because I got to draw a salary while gaining professional English skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You\u2019d assume Sergeant Kikuchi has overseas school experience, but she doesn\u2019t. \u201cThe first time I encountered English was in the seventh grade along with everyone else in the public school system. In those days, the textbook was New Horizon and I quite enjoyed studying it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kikuchi remembers learning the phrase \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with you?\u201d during an English class. A simple phrase, and yet it opened the door to her future career. \u201cThere was an ALT (assistant language teacher) who came to our school on a weekly basis. One day, she was washing her hands and looked as if she was in a jam. I rolled out \u2018What\u2019s wrong?\u2019 and she explained that she didn\u2019t have a handkerchief. I lent her mine and she thanked me. In that little exchange, I actually initiated and then succeeded in having a real conversation in English. I was thrilled. It was a moment of personal triumph that has always stayed with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kikuchi\u2019s interest in English led her to choose a high school that emphasized global perspectives and international understanding. \u201cAfter high school, I would have loved to study abroad but instead, I applied to and was accepted into the GSDF. I figured that I could start a savings account for studying abroad later.\u201d Kikuchi\u2019s ultimate goal was to acquire enough language skills to enable her to work in English. \u201cI knew that the GSDF had an English course. I had heard of someone who went on to a second career thanks to English skills gained during their time in the GSDF.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kikuchi says that the first few years were rough going. \u201cIt took time for me to shed the mindset of a teenage student. But I had a goal to achieve, so I stuck with it.\u201d She explains that the Ground Self-Defense Force offers three levels of English training: basic, primary and advanced. \u201cThe course lasts between three and six months, and only those who complete the advanced course are designated as language specialists upon graduation. Everyone in the GSDF has a core area of expertise, but language skills are regarded as an additional qualification rather than a primary one.\u201d
Kikuchi\u2019s own expertise is accounting. \u201cLike other fields, accounting is crucial to the organization but it\u2019s also a skill that can be utilized in the outside world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even with her English and accounting skills, Kikuchi says she has no plans to leave the GSDF. Currently, she works in the Northern Army, interpreting with foreign military forces that are visiting or training in Hokkaido. She also works with the U.S. Armed Forces for bilateral exercises. \u201cThe U.S. is Japan\u2019s only ally so these bilateral exercises are especially crucial to Japan\u2019s national security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kikuchi studies constantly to maintain and polish her language skills. \u201cThe GSDF gave me the opportunity to hone my English and become an interpreter. I don\u2019t feel the need to study abroad anymore. I want to give back by doing the best work I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
