The Osaka Expo opened its doors April 13 to the first of what organizers hope will be 28.2 million visitors over the next six months to Yumeshima island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A day after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed hopes that the expo can bring together a world that he called \u201cdivided,\u201d the general public got its first look at the massive Grand Ring, designed to symbolize unity, and the roughly 160 pavilions of participating nations, regions and organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A marching band welcomed the first people through the gates alongside a group that included Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura and Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, the secretary general of the Bureau International des Expositions, which organizes world expos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yes, the expo\u2019s peculiar mascot, Myaku-Myaku, was there too, helping usher in the stream of visitors, some clad in headgear resembling the multi-eyed character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rainy weather on the opening day canceled a planned flyover by the Air Self-Defense Force\u2019s Blue Impulse demonstration crew, but seemed to do little to dampen the spirits of expo early birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mari Iwasawa, an Osaka native who now lives in Saitama Prefecture, was among the first guests through the gates when the expo opened at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For her, the expo represented something of a nostalgia trip, as Iwasawa attended the 1970 Expo numerous times as a young child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
