Japanese rice fish detect ultraviolet rays from sunlight and turn their bodies black, a team of researchers has found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The findings were published recently in the journal Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recent research had found that some animals, including fish, can detect light without using their eyes. However, scientists did not know why this happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some Japanese rice fish are almost translucent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team found that cells in the pituitary gland of the fish detect UV rays. They send a signal to pigment cells on the fish\u2019s body. The fish\u2019s body then turns black for protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team suspects that animals with almost translucent bodies may have yet more ways to detect light directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
