For visitors to London, a day trip to Guildford, in nearby Surrey, is just the thing to connect to the charm of English history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the train station, take a short walk to West Horsley Place, a beautiful manor house built in the 15th century. Take an informative tour inside the 50-room house to see curiosities like the bag that held Sir Walter Raleigh\u2019s head. The house was the setting of long-running BBC sitcom Ghosts, and you can see a model of the TV show\u2019s Button House inside. The clean, manicured and very English grounds of the 380-acre estate are a delight to stroll through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cathedral in Guildford is relatively young, built in the 1960s, and is an impressive sight lit up at night surrounded by the town\u2019s houses. It\u2019s famous among locals for its 12 bells, which are rung every Sunday. If you\u2019re interested, you can arrange to watch ringers at Tuesday practice \u2013 or maybe even take part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another local landmark is Guildford Castle. The castle was probably built by William the Conqueror after he invaded England in 1066. Much of it is gone, but the Great Tower \u2013 a squat box on a hill in Guildford\u2019s public gardens \u2013 commands your attention. Inside, read about famous people connected with Guildford, including several English kings. From the tower, you\u2019ll see spectacular views of the town. The best thing about the castle is the public gardens, which are filled with bright floral displays and always attract crowds on sunny Surrey days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, take a walking tour along cobblestone streets and past Tudor houses to learn more about the rich history of this very English town.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
