For the first time in 13 years, Japan has certified two new astronauts, with both of them set to continue their training in the U.S. in preparation for becoming the first non-U.S. astronauts to set foot on the moon under NASA\u2019s Artemis program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency officially certified 29-year-old Ayu Yoneda, a former surgeon with the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center, along with Makoto Suwa, a 47-year-old former disaster risk specialist with the World Bank, on Oct. 22, following more than a year of basic training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at a news conference Oct. 23 in Tokyo, Suwa expressed relief at completing his basic training but acknowledged that the journey ahead remains long, while Yoneda said she hoped her bid to set foot on the moon would encourage other young people to reach for the stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
