Former professional boxer Iwao Hakamata has been found not guilty over a 1966 quadruple murder case, a Shizuoka court ruled on Sept. 26 \u2014 a long-awaited retrial verdict for the defendant and his supporters, who have fought to prove his innocence since he was first arrested for the crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Retrials are extremely rare in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Shizuoka District Court\u2019s ruling paves the way for the 88-year-old Hakamata to be exonerated if prosecutors do not appeal the decision within two weeks. It is the fifth case in Japan\u2019s postwar history that a person whose death penalty has been finalized was found innocent in a retrial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI heard the judge say the defendant was not guilty \u2026 I was so overwhelmed with joy that tears streamed down my face,\u201d Hideko Hakamata, the elder sister of Iwao Hakamata, said after the court delivered its ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m really grateful to everyone for their support for such a long time,\u201d she said.
