\u82f1\u8a9e\uff1a\u201cJapan high schoolers create illustrated English food labels to help foreign residents<\/strong>\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Three students here have developed illustrated English food labels to help foreign residents avoid meal-time mishaps, like Muslims eating items containing pork, or anyone not fluent in Japanese simply buying entirely the wrong thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The labels have been well-received at a convenience store in Hashimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, and won the trio an award from Umedai, a general incorporated association promoting future-oriented education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three students at Wakayama Prefectural Hashimoto High School, Hinayo Inui, Hiyori Imaya and Miyu Fukui, started the project in the fall of their second year as part of “integrated exploration time,” a program aimed at contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They initially asked their school’s American assistant language teacher (ALT) about the language challenges she faced, and were surprised to learn that shopping beat public signage at train stations and elsewhere as her most significant issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surveying foreigners from countries like the Philippines and Nepal who attended a local vocational school, the students collected responses from over 30 people. The answers highlighted problems such as accidentally consuming religiously prohibited foods and spending excessive time shopping. With the cooperation of a local FamilyMart convenience store with many foreign customers near Hashimoto Station, they began posting labels with illustrations and English descriptions in front of products in November 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, a ham cutlet sandwich was labeled “Ham cutlet” in English and featured a pig illustration to indicate it contains pork. Around 100 items, including onigiri rice balls and fried chicken, were labeled with similar illustrations. Imaya explained, “We included illustrations because not everyone understands English,” while Fukui added, “We realized that even ordinary high school students can help those in need.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Store manager Shinichi Nagumo noted the positive impact, saying, “The students’ ideas are innovative. Foreign customers often asked if products contained meat, but now they can see that from the labels, leading to more frequent purchases.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By around this February, the students expanded their efforts to Mount Koya, a popular spot for foreign tourists in Koya, Wakayama Prefecture. They created labels for items sold at the Katsumaya store, including Koya-style dried wheat gluten sticks and “Tenku Hannya” beer. Manager Daiki Kawamata appreciated the initiative, saying, “I’ve heard of foreigners who don’t know how to eat the gluten sticks just biting into them. The students’ labels clearly and gently convey the products’ details and the way to eat them, and foreigners are picking the items up and looking at them.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “SDGs Tankyu Awards 2023” received about 750 entries nationwide, and the students’ project won the support organization award. Inui expressed her delight, saying, “We focused on something within our capabilities rather than grand themes like global warming, and that proved successful.”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
