Columbia University on May 6 canceled its main graduation ceremony after weeks of pro-Palestinian protests roiled the Ivy League college\u2019s campus, but it will still hold smaller, school-based events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHolding a large commencement ceremony on our campus presented security concerns that unfortunately proved insur\u00admountable,\u201d said Columbia spokesperson Ben Chang. \u201cLike our students, we are deeply disappointed with this outcome.\u201d Graduation had been scheduled for May 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chang said the university in New York City had sought an alternative venue but was unable to find one that could accommodate students, families and guests. The total attendance normally exceeds 50,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The protests at the college, which drew national attention, have inspired similar demonstrations at dozens of universities across the U.S. Students have called for a cease-fire in Gaza and have demanded their schools divest from companies with ties to Israel.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
