The British Museum said on Oct. 18 it planned to digitize its entire collection. The announcement comes after it reported in August that 2,000 artifacts had been stolen or were missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the aftermath of the thefts, the museum\u2019s director quit. The museum also fired a staff member over the thefts and started a review of security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The London police are investigating the thefts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEssentially we were the victims of an inside job,\u201d George Osborne, the chair of the museum, told a parliamentary committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere are lots of lessons to be learned,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposed digitization project will take five years, with 2.4 million records to upload or upgrade. The British Museum\u2019s collection totals at least 8 million objects, according to the museum website.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
