The Florida Keys have long been a playground for Floridians, and one of their favorite destinations is Key Largo. What doesn\u2019t this wonderful island have? It\u2019s got crystal-clear waters, it\u2019s got stunning coral reefs, and it\u2019s got a laid-back island vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scuba divers come here to visit John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, a large underwater park in Key Largo with sensational coral formations that have to be seen to be believed. Sadly this year, water temperatures off Florida rose above 35 degrees, bleaching swaths of coral. Hopefully they can recover in time for a visit in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Divers can also head to the popular coral reef North Dry Rocks. The reef system is near a spectacular piece of public art: the Christ of the Abyss statue. It faces an identical statue near Genoa, Italy, more than 8,000 kilometers away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kayak through the mangrove forests, where you can see a dizzying amount of wildlife. Below the glass bottom of your kayak, bright tropical fish will delight you. Keep your eyes peeled for sea turtles, manatees and sharks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re a diver, then explore the wreck of the USS Spiegel Grove. This 160-meter-long ship served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1989, and was sunk as an artificial reef in 2002. Today, divers swim through the bridge and pose with the American flag on the ship\u2019s deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an inspirational experience, visit Island Dolphin Care, a nonprofit where dolphins work with special needs children and veterans. You can take a tour, learn about the mission, and interact one-on-one with a dolphin. It\u2019s an opportunity you can\u2019t pass up.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
