Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant on Aug. 20 as the government prepares to release treated radioactive water stored at the facility into the sea, despite opposition from fishers and some neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government is in \u201cthe final stage\u201d of procedures before deciding on the timing of the water release, Kishida told reporters in Washington on Aug. 18 after he attended a trilateral summit with the United States and South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kishida inspected the water treatment system and other facilities at the Fukushima plant. The prime minister also held talks with Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings President Tomoaki Kobayakawa during which he urged the company to assure safety and deal with any negative rumors that may arise from the water release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is an issue that cannot be postponed to proceed with the decommissioning (of the plant) and Fukushima\u2019s reconstruction,\u201d Kishida told reporters after inspecting the plant.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
