Thailand\u2019s easternmost province, Ubon Ratchathani, offers tourists a unique and immersive experience. Its capital city has temples with intricate artwork, fun festivals and bustling night markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start your day at Wat Phra That Nong Bua, a Buddhist temple atop a hill that has panoramic views of Ubon Ratchathani city. Enter through a gate guarded by a green dragon sculpture and crane your neck to see the top of the 56-meter-high main gold-and-white tower. Built in 1956, the temple is popular with tourists and Buddhists alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But some of the best sights are out east, toward the border with Laos, in and around Pha Taem National Park. The park is known for cave paintings that some say are 3,000 years old, as well as tall rock pillars shaped like mushrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enjoy a brilliant night experience at the temple Wat Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Phrao. After the sun sets, an image of a tree glows on a wall of the temple and in front of it luminescent shapes such as flowers appear on the ground. You can even \u201cdraw\u201d on the floor using the torch of your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visit in early August to enjoy the Candle Festival, which celebrates the beginning of the rainy season. Traditionally, people give Buddhist monks items for their personal use. People also share candles to chase away the darkness. Today, it\u2019s a major event, with giant candles paraded through the streets. The candles are carved by artists in religious themes. And no, they aren\u2019t lit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, end your Thailand experience at a night market. Gorge yourself on spicy noodles, washed down with a lychee drink!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
