Steven Spielberg is reflecting on one particular \u201cregret\u201d regarding his iconic film \u201cE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently appearing at Time\u2019s 100 Summit, the famed director called out his decision to edit guns out of a scene from the film years after its release, calling the lapse in judgment a \u201cmistake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was a mistake,\u201d Spielberg admitted in a clip shared on Youtube Tuesday. \u201cI never should have done that because E.T. is a product of its era.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1982 theatrical cut of the science fiction film includes a scene where officers carrying firearms chase a group of young kids. Spielberg nixed the guns out of the scene for the 20th-anniversary release of the film and replaced them with walkie-talkies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explaining his directorial decision, he revealed, \u201c\u2018E.T.\u2019 was a film that I was sensitive to the fact that the federal agents were approaching kids with firearms exposed, and I thought I would change the guns into walkie-talkies\u2026 Years went by, and I changed my own views.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spielberg insisted he made the changes due to his evolving views but said it eventually dawned on him that he should have left the movie the way it was. \u201cI should have never messed with the archives of my own work, and I don\u2019t recommend anyone do that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arguing that movies should never be retroactively edited for modern audiences, he added: \u201cAll our movies are a kind of a signpost of where we were when we made them, what the world was like, and what the world was receiving when we got those stories out there. So I really regret having that out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spielberg\u2019s admission comes a month after he called \u201cE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial\u201d the \u201cperfect movie\u201d in an interview with Stephen Colbert on \u201cThe Late Show.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of the few movies I\u2019ve made that I can actually look back at again and again,\u201d he told Colbert at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
