The Cultural Affairs Agency on March 27 opened in Kyoto after relocating from Tokyo, becoming the first government body to move its headquarters from the capital as part of Japan\u2019s push to boost the regions through decentralization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The agency, which transferred its main functions \u2014 including the commissioner\u2019s office \u2014 to Kyoto, will focus on disseminating Japanese culture from the ancient western capital that is famous among foreign tourists for its traditional aesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI want the employees in Kyoto to be flexible and make full use of virtual options as the forerunners of the central government\u2019s promotion of work-style reforms,\u201d Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said in a speech via video conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With its Kyoto office scheduled to become fully operational on May 15, the agency will initially operate with about 70 people in the city, including Commissioner Shun\u00adichi Tokura.
