Japan formally decided Jan. 27 to downgrade the legal status of the novel coronavirus on May 8 to \u201cClass 5,\u201d the same category as common infectious diseases such as seasonal influenza, to ease COVID-19 prevention rules, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a major policy shift in its response to the three-year-long pandemic, the Japanese government would be able to relax existing COVID-19 measures, including limiting the movements of infected people and their close contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reclassification of COVID-19 to Class 5 came after a panel of experts under the health ministry agreed on the plan earlier in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The imminent downgrade would pave the way for a normalization of social and economic activities in Japan. The quarantine period \u2013 seven days for those infected with the virus and five for close contacts \u2013 will be scrapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Japan, COVID-19 is classified in a category equivalent to Class 2, which covers infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, but allows stricter measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scheduled date of May 8 is the first business day after the end of this year\u2019s Golden Week holidays. It is about 10 days before Japan hosts the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima for three days through May 21.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
