South Koreans mourned and searched for relatives lost in the \u201chell-like\u201d chaos that killed more than 150 people, mostly young adults, when a huge Halloween party crowd surged into a narrow alley in a nightlife district in Seoul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It remained unclear what led the crowd to surge into the downhill alley in the Itaewon area on the night of Oct. 29, and authorities promised a thorough investigation. Witnesses said people fell on each other \u201clike dominoes,\u201d and some victims were bleeding from their noses and mouths while being given CPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of late Oct. 30, officials said 153 people were killed and 133 were injured. Nearly two-thirds of those killed \u2014 97 \u2014 were women. More than 80% of the dead were in their 20s and 30s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the fatalities were two Japanese nationals, both female, with one in her 20s and another a teenager, according to Japan\u2019s Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An estimated 100,000 people had gathered in Itaewon for the country\u2019s biggest outdoor Halloween festivities since the pandemic began. The South Korean government had eased COVID-19 restrictions in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a one-week national mourning period on Oct. 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA tragedy and disaster that should not have happened took place in the heart of Seoul,\u201d Yoon said.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
