Welcome back to Fujimura\u2019s Journey!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today\u2019s article, we\u2019ll review the next obstacle we faced in term 1! Critical thinking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we waited for our graded readers, I wanted to build the skills we\u2019d need for class discussion. To do
this, I introduced critical thinking and debate. We began doing concept maps, opinion writing, and
jigsaw reading. Following the school\u2019s goals, I used Eiken topics to work on these skills. Adding creativity<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to the classroom keeps the students motivated, so I made pairs and made them choose their own topic
that they wanted to debate in front of the class. They had to plan it out with concept maps and make a
Powerpoint presentation with their Ipads to support their argument with pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This class apparently loves food, because 80% of the groups talked about food. For example: Which is
better, rice or bread? Which ice cream brand is better, Supercup or Sou? When I noticed this, I was
worried that the students would give subjective reasons. But they didn\u2019t! I was pleased when they
talked about the longevity, the quantity vs the price, the variety of flavors, and so on. Some groups even
researched selling data and national popularity rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having the students choose their own topics made them work hard to find good reasons to support it. It
also demonstrated how much students understood the concept of what makes an argument strong. I\u2019m
happy with their progress this term and hope to continue it in the future with more detailed work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
